Harvey's mother was a sullen and moody thing, and when a passing drifter took her heart and left her with child the village elders and wisefolk all said he'd not last the term. Stricken with grief, she fell into a queer fit, withdrawing from her chores and refusing to speak of the child; some of the kinfolk whisper that she took to the woods often then, when the pale moonlight lit the dales and weird and cruel things cavorted in the night, and locked herself away during the daylight hours, babbling quietly to herself. When the child was born, a sickly and shriveled goatish little thing, she gave him the name "Harvey" and spoke no more.
Frail, perpetually sickly, and possessed of a keen and caustic wit, Harvey has mostly kept to himself for his twenty-odd years... and that suits his kin just fine. Some of the more superstitious residents swear up and down that the boy is strange, weird, unclean, or plain unruly- and even the most skeptical find it hard to explain his midnight sojourns amongst the moonlit dales.
