A simple note stuffed in an envelope addressed to Bartley Eustacius Fulmineth II let at Minchin's Boarding House

BEF,

I am familiar with the existence, but not all the contents Grynith's Grimoire, after having witnessed the dealings of Enesto the Turncoat with Brie Cesme.

Ye are certain - Soto-eg's name appears in that work?

Little Leaf,

I was impatient and unkind.

My cares and troubles multiply, and I gave into a dark mood of some despair at my own smallness.

That loathing was misplaced, it was for myself, but I set some of it on thee.

Ye asked earnestly for my help and perhaps to teach ye what little I know, and in a way, for us to mend and grow, and better change.

I had no standing to dismiss it as I have done. In truth, I think  I owe ye far, far more than what ye asked.

I'll try again, and be better friend to thee than I was.

Bug Reports / Zif-Uroti's Chambers take limited
« on: August 22, 2022, 04:47:59 PM »
Zif-Uroti's Chambers, one of the randomized quest options that spawns in 99 has an unadvertised take limit of 4 attempts per character. Some text to the quest giver should be added OR the take limit removed. Although this quest has some unique items, my impression is that it is not radically different from other high level quests and the randomized aspect probably already addresses concern of over subscription.

Jack Rabbit,

Matters of the fey and Summer Court are in some disarray and confusion. My brother Solomyn has the seed of a way forward, but it will take much navigating and nurturing ere it blossoms.

For now, one thing that would be of great value in my work is an entire account, as plain as ye can state it from your involvement and eventual final confrontation with Galynnon. Sadly internal matters distracted me from getting it fully last we spoke.

Could ye pen such a thing and put it in the Book of the Commons?

Haggahwhisp the Shy,

Quote
"It is the duty of any members of the commons to safeguard and protect the life of other members of the commons, as his strength allows. Capture, personal peril, or personal cost do not excuse this duty."

Wisdom there we discovered together and a notion I ascribe to gladly. Suppose ye can judge for yourself to what degree ye might.

As for what ye have asked of me concerning my tear and its related project, I have decided not to defer as my own conscience dictates. Practically, this means I'll take no part in it, risks or rewards. Neither help nor hinder. That is how disagreeing should work. I have my reasons, one, though not the only, being after my interview with Maghara, I believe this project to be a personal ambition not commissioned on behalf of Mongrels or even the spirit of the woods, and ultimately not the most pressing concern facing the outer rings. But this isn't really a question of our stated reasons, whatever their merits.

This is a question about the role of conscience and the way in which I, or really any of us ought to live with one another when we disagree.

On one hand, I have disagreed, and so I have resolved to take no part. I do not help, nor do I raise my hand or hinder thee.

From what I can guess, ye don't accept that I ought to have the freedom to follow my conscience in this matter, and so must be forced to defer. That is against the spirit of the duty to protect, at the least, but more fundamentally at contra-purpose to my personal freedom. And I am free, and so should you be. It ought not be conditioned on how inconvenient it may be to our respective ambitions or whether we agree with one another or not. Matter fact, I reckon that's the very substance of freedom.

Quote
"This is the more true notion: the many are stronger than one. On one hand, that is why a means to gather and guide the collected will of the many is of utmost advantage. On the other hand, since the many are stronger than one but they are imperfectly and inconsistently wiser than one, it is necessary to have a means to protect the few from the many."

Lastly, I reckon if you really thought about it for twenty seconds, ye could easily name a man who has many tears and is actually a foe to druids. If you want tears, go take those ones back. If instead, it isn't actually about the tear, as I'm not convinced it really is, but rather about me and how I think - then what does that make you?

Solomyn,

Brother, it warmed me to see you again after your wanderings in dreams. There is something however we should investigate soon- a matter for the Summer Court and Winter Court that perhaps the Le Bleak estate can help answer.

A search of the old rooms Sverri used in the Velvet left us only more questions .

Mil the Raven,

Sister, a small request that slipped my mind as we were discussing news of the seasons, Nothing and internal matters last night. That strange abjuring air that you bottle - One of the recondite has not the knack to use wands and things but it would aid him considerably to be armed with that sort of magic. Could you make three or four bottles for his use?

E. El'hazarim,

Make ye still, in the Willow Ways.

Listen to the goggle-eyed frog croak

to the whispering of the leaves in shifting breeze

hear the tireless sweet sawing of the crickets,

as they turn their loneliness into a blanket of amity.

       ,~.
      {;@;}
    *..`~'..*

I have, and many others besides, taken pains to

enlarge my circle, and plant new gardens

both within and without the hearts of men,

so that more will come and join that chorus,

just as crickets might.

       ,~.
      {;@;}
    *..`~'..*

But the wolf remarked true, as we stood in deliberation.

Her and I look across ways at one another often,

yet both looking into the same garden.

She said that though the span is larger by these works,

its perimeter much thinner.

       ,~.
      {;@;}
    *..`~'..*

Indeed, tender green buds must proceed blossoms

and blossoms proceed bark on the boughs.

All know there are always fewer flowers than buds,

and the wiser gardener kens that the whole is made stronger

when the limbs are minded, pruned in proportion for a future

that is in the eye of the gardener alone.

       ,~.
      {;@;}
    *..`~'..*

So now comes the purpose of my writing thee

I, and I reckon thee, have come to know many ways

that men arrange their affairs or have them arranged.

From the snarling tribes of the woe-formed woods,

to the deliberations of named men, scarred and tattooed.

To the riddle and maze of the huscarls, their lairds

and the half remembered edicts of a sleeping king.

       ,~.
      {;@;}
    *..`~'..*

My design is give to the gardeners to be

a means to arrange their discord and doubts

to best make harmony and clarity.

How to shape the future,

without being destroyed by it.

Will ye help me give this design form?

It will be no mean undertaking,

and I fear I may be unfit to do it alone.

Isla,

If ye want to know what the anglers are about, ye don't need any magic diviner's eye glasses to see the truth. Why just ask them to bring Marcel around during your next visit. I saw him trundling along his master and mates, so he can make the walk. Never mind it was two days /after/ he died. Also he might not fit through the door anymore.

But that's progress to some. Amirah's mighty proud I am sure.

Wesley,

Ye were young, perhaps two months ago. Yet I know the age of a soul is not well counted by turns of the season. Ye are young no longer.

Ye have weathered strife, grief, and woe. Faced a host of dangers, in shapes both familiar and monstrous. Ye have righted wrongs and conquered fear.

And yet, there is a thought my mind turns. Ye have been a huscarl, and earned a name. What will ye be now that the page turns and a new act begins?

I am no great sage, and I have only by some trick of luck outlived my foolishness and pride. Doubtless ye will choose your path. Yet if ye do seek peace, another way, then please, come to the gardens. It matters not if ye think me foe or friend, for I love as the Moon does, and so love thee either way.

I have lived the night. To my ever lasting shame, I should not have.

Laid to rest in a place of blooms and peace, her broken and tortured frame. So  small a woman yet I can't remember a heavier weight to have carried.

He said  to me one last gift given of eternal dreams; verdant green.

Yet I wonder if this was perhaps a last kindness to me and my now aching guilt - for I fear the dead  feel nothing.

It is of little consequence, but I may yet have some use for what I gave thee. Mayhaps when I can stand to see my own face again reflected back in the  pond's surface, I will ask the favor of its return.

On Battles

By Rin of Oldflowers
Groundskeeper of Lord Phelan

<:>:<:>:<:>:<:>:<:>

First I say that if ye find yourself fool enough to be drawing a sabre or hefting a spear for anything other than maybe trying to sell it, then ye have made at least one mistake. If ye should find yourself arranging spears and swords for some kind of battle, then ye for certain have compounded many mistakes.

So my advice is that ye avoid battles whenever possible. If ye figure it out that someone really will try and kill you and are themselves not very wise, one tactic ye could try would be to steer them into a battle with somebody else. Or maybe arrange it so they fall into a well, or have their next hunting trip meet an angry bear. Much less dangerous than going to some fool battle.

In the unfortunate circumstance that none of that works and ye do find yourself in the daft state with your face painted, your shield about your arm next to your named men and thralls afore some other bastards wanting to rip your guts out, best thing for it is to have your chiefs go on out and fight it out in a duel. Bloody mad thing to do, fight in a duel, but that's what ye get for trying to arrange battles.

If now ye are in fact the most foolish person present, have some how made a mess of things and ended up in a battle AND ye happen to be the chief and have to fight in a duel, well now here I suppose ye may as well draw your sabre. Hopefully ye would have had some practice in the arena fighting men in mail and so on. Bloody hard work, but that's the only way to out-live your own foolishness. Best be quick as ye can about it. Kick some sand in his eyes, knock him over and cave in his skull. That's my advice.
