Screen Shots & Obituaries / Mr. Symme
January 10, 2009, 09:43:22 PM
Adam Symme started off as an attempt to make a shady thief, who did his best to make things suitable for folks around him and men who worked with him on thieves jobs. In a way he succeeded, but in a round-about way after a wild ride.

Shortly after being hired at the Hanged Goblin, He recieved this jacket, and his world quickly changed. "Try this on, Mr. Symme", is what was said, and afterwords the moniker stuck.

Business boomed, and he found himself facilitating the needs of Contract Killers, Bandits, Corrupt Officials, Thieves, and other sordid businesses that he had no experience with.

Altruistic to the end, he did his best to facilitate the needs of "The greater good", sacrificing criminals and the like who were either bad for business, or bad for the city, to the forces of law.

I've got about 150 screenshots from the character short-but intensely-long career, and it was a great ride to rock out with folks I interacted with who can't be named for spoilers.

Mr Symme shall spend the rest of his days sitting half naked on a desert island.

It was a hoot, and I'm proud to finally have a character I was able to "Retire", after succeeding in his goals, rather than being murdered or ragequitting after things didn't go his way.

I believe one iconic shot can show the entirety of his character:

So it goes, Keep on rockin', etc.

General Discussion / Applications and You: A Workshop.
January 10, 2009, 08:07:48 PM
I've spoken with a fair deal of people as of late concerning the topic of Applications. I'd like to settle some things, for those interested.

In my speaking with folks, As I often love writing a good application and building characters/factions, I've come across numerous reasons why individuals don't write more.

A good deal of people can make interesting backstories for their concepts, and have an idea what/where they want it to go, but more often than not, Appaphobia boils down to one thing: Goals.

I hope to show you some easier ways to app, as well as work with Goals, to see that more people Apply for cool things.

1) "Because I'm no good at apping". Applications are, in a nutshell, everything you've done already if you are playing a character you enjoy. Traditionally there are two ways I've seen people like to apply. First, Paragraphs.
Quote from: "Joe the Stygian's Application"My first goal as Joe is a Hardened Warrior would see what I can do to whip some of the rabble in the city into a stable of assisting PC's on Plots and RP that I come across. He spent his youth in an academy at the behest of his father, and though it took him a while Joe finally learned to love, and thrive under military service. I would hope to set up a small academy of sorts in which Joe would share his knowledge with newer/inexperienced Warriors. A fee, Some lectures, some PvP. Should enough people grow interested or I find an individual who shines, I would do my best to help him make his way into the faction

The second way I have seen people apply for things, is the idea of an Outline.
Quote from: "Ted the Footmen of the Order"As Ted was Born and Raised in a harsh criminal community, in which a brutal dictator reigned, He quickly found himself teaming up with Rabble-rousers and Tormish Rebels. My goals are as follows:

1) Organize goodly individuals
- I would hope to see those of like minded interests come together, in which I would help point them in the direction of the true villains
- I would do my best to see that any and all goodly individuals (Even those not of Torm's faith or the Order's blessing) find themselves with a mission. Spies, Merchants, Wizarsd, Anything.
- Using Spies to investigate crimes with the assist of the guard to build Public Relations, Use merchants to outfit my fellow footmen and other allies, Use Wizards to investigate arcane and alchemy and other means to fight the troubles of the server as well as perhaps use them to spy on necromancers
- Warriors, Paladins, and the like that I came across I would hope to take on regular patrols of known troubled areas. The Sewers, The Webbed Woods, the Wilds, and other places the Order has regularly fought the Orcs.

2) "Because I cannot think of any good goals" This is one that I find many people have trouble with, and often times find myself saddened. The idea of Applications Goals in EFUA can be everything from "I hope to make a respectable and honest merchant who has a weakness for all things shiny" to "I hope to see the Goblins of Gobsquat driven out in Moradin's Honor and see the place turned into a Haven for the Dwarven Race".

All the DMs are looking for, is that you have a plan of some sort. Something that says "Hey, I love this idea, Have a look at some things that i've thought about that I think would be fun! Hopefully you think they would be fun and hopefully together we can make things fun for some PC's".

Lets say you wanted a PC Faction HQ. Who doesn't want a place to hang out and relax, as well as meet and RP? Lets also say you enjoy questing regularly, because the challenges of it get your heart pumping and you love overcoming odds.  What do you do?

You do what you love. Tell the DMs you want it because you hope to put together a group to topple every challenge they can throw at you, be it scripted or DM, and become an elite group of adventurers, with a bar to hang out in and recruit PCs to join you in your adventures. That sounds like a pretty solid goal to me.

Goals, Most people already have with PCs. I don't know if its an intimidation factor in an application, or there's some folks that have trouble putting their ideas into words, but anyone can do good with apps.

QuoteImportant note: Not all applications have to be -you- doing things. Many people apply for roles of henchmen, or individuals who are remarkably poor at leading things. A goal you could have of a Tiefling Ranger with Horns who is an outcast, is simply to do your best to find new and innovative ways to come off as a horrific even monsterous outcast. Maybe you want to make a Half Orc Stygian who while not a great leader is a man who has difficulty between his role as Soldier and the internal bloodlust that makes him want to slaughter everyone when he's angry.

3) Because I'm afraid of Applications Don't be. This, is likely the #1 reason I speak with people about who say they don't like applying for things. That, be it due to sincere fear their idea won't be accepted, or a misconception, they dislike applying. DMs are very good about helping you out with ideas, as are numerous other PCs. Some of us really enjoy it, and no DM will ever go "Man, That's a dumb idea" ([sarcasm]Except maybe DangerousDan[/sarcasm])

Believe it or not, DMs and PCs alike enjoy interesting, dynamic characters. Sometimes, that comes in the form of applications. If you've got an idea you want to pursue, Ask around in IRC, here, or talk to people. EFUA is full of helpful folks.

4) Because no faction suits my concept Then make one! PC factions are some of the most dynamic and interesting things you can do on EFUA. Applications can be used to give Faction HQ's, Special alliances with NPC/DM Factions, Special back stories and possible preludes to enhance your Faction RP, etc.

Not only do applications give DMs an idea of what you're doing with a group of PCs or your PC in particular, but it also helps them get to know PCs better, as well as make things -easier- for -you- to RP. I often find even when I'm not applying for something, using the format of an applciation to just fill out for myself helps out a great deal in creating a character.

To summarize:

Ask around, Talk with people, and Don't be afraid. The Application Process can yield a great deal of RP opportunities and fun for everyone, if you do it correctly.

Its been said time and again already, that DM factions at the moment are lacking members.

The Stygian Armada and The Order in particular.

Look around the forum. Talk with existing members of these faction IC and OOC. Talk with the DMs.

Hope it helps.

General Discussion / Help with Long Term Characters
January 08, 2009, 11:31:41 PM
Alright folks. I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and talk a bit about what's going on with me at the moment. I'm known for making short lived guys, and have loved playing EFU in such a way. My recent character though I hoped to break the personal trend, and in a lot of ways, I have.

Adam Symme has changed pretty drastically from what I originally set out for him to do, to the point where I've feel like I have "Won", and have a strange feeling to not even play the guy anymore.

I love the character, and the ride up to this point has been awesome, but I am in need of some advice from people who have played Long term characters, particularly of the criminal variety. I feel like I've fallen into new territory without a map.

What happens when you feel like there's nothing else for you to do?

I've been trying to fill my time with plots, as I normally do, but I find that those are best spent against other PC Rivals or Foes, but even in that area I feel like I'm lacking.

I've never had something like this happen, where I've become established, and actually succeeded in my goals. Usually long before this time, I make a mis-step, piss off the wrong person, or the cards fall against me and I die. I sit there, thinking "Damn, That was really fun", and begin rolling up my next new adventure into EFU

This time I haven't though. I've survived. ICly, the Character is having the time of his life.

Sadly, OOCly though, It is getting pretty dull. It feels like there's no real challenges to overcome from my side, and It feels a combination of jaded/conceited to go "I should just keep things going, keep interacting and working with PCs, and wait for DM plots to come down the Pipeline for me to send them on". I've always loved being a criminal because DMs weren't required to have a great time. Now though, it almost feels like its a necessary thing.

I've always enjoyed playing a Criminal character because it is a challenge. Survive against all odds to find contentment, profit, and joy in the pursuit of building an empire. As I said, I normally am dead by this far in a character's development.

It just kinda feels like, "I've done it!", kind of thing, if that's understandable. I spent a few hours hopping around IG today, had some fun interactions with great PCs, but having played a character this long, and completed all of his goals, it almost feels like he's done.

But I don't want him to be, if that makes sense.

As I said, I'm curious if anyone here has had this problem, or if anyone has any suggestions to help me along. This has kinda turned into a bit of a rant, but I am honestly confused where to go at this point.

When you're happy with how plots have gone, You've no more need to pursue Quests for XP and Gold, You get to interact with PCs a lot, but have no real "Driving Challenges", because you feel a great sense of accomplishment and fulfillment with a PC. From both an IC and OOC perspective, what do you do to keep playing interesting? I've sat around trying to find more goals to pursue with my PC, but kept coming back to "ICly, He'd relax, take a back row, and enjoy the sweet life he's worked so hard to gain". That's not really fun OOC, though, Y'know?

Bug Reports / EFUSRE: Gold Dwarf
December 31, 2008, 11:38:15 PM
I've got a Gold Dwarf alternate (Murin Elgyr, RandomWhitePaladin) I play on from time to time.

For his subrace I put in "Gold", only to learn that it was supposed to be "gold" un-capitalized.

Any way to fix this, or would is it a Remake issue?

It says "Loading subrace: Gold, Successful", but my stats are that of a standard dwarf.

General Discussion / Sunday Night Fight Night Night
December 22, 2008, 04:48:31 AM
Just wanted to say, it was great to host it, and kudos to Mort and those who showed up.

It seemed to be a very consistent, and fairly balanced event. Everyone was a good sport and it was alot of fun.

Mr. Gabriel Syme said it best himself.

Tragically Random_White_Guy returns, Always the comic!

It seems in my Absence EFU has taken a turn for the north (North is always up on a map), and I am most intrigued to see what the awesome DM team has whipped up now.

Just thought I'd shamelessly say hello once more, and reintroduce myself as I fear I must begin as "New guy" all over again.

My name is RwG and I am an NWN-aholic. From humble beginnings as a coal miner's daughter I- Achem.

I'm more-so plot focused than anything, and as many here enjoy some good'ol'fashioned RP. Always willing to dive on a grenade to enhance and continue a story, and work well with others. I'm notoriously known for short lived characters, which I am proud to say is a problem I broke while on hiatus. As well I have a panache for pissing off people and getting my patently weak characters into fights with far superior ones after I verbally incite my beat down.

I like my Half Orcs borderline feral but none the less a modicum of intellegence, my Dwarves traditionalists who care about history, dwarf pride and honor, and hating creatures more so than "KIN KIN ALE KIN", I like my Halflings mature but pranksterish, My Elves haughty and rude (After all, why fight when their weakness to time will end them), and my Gnomes always tinkering.

Class wise I tend to roll with Rogues and Wizards, more hands off and assessing of situations, as well as suited for dirty work if need be and manipulation more often.

Evil is my bread and butter, as I am a Political Science Major and Pre-Law, and as such I make for a mean criminal consultant. More often than not I'm more mastermind oriented than leader and always looking for a good time(giggidy), but at times the two go hand in hand and should it be required am more than happy to put my natural charisma to use :D. (Plus, y'know, super humble).

So, in this brave new world of things such as "Sunlight" and "Trees" and "Can walk in the wilds without being mauled by Deep Lizards", I look forward to sharing the time with you at this New and most improved EFU Experience.

To old friends, warm tidings.

To new friends, Aloha and I look forward to meeting and working with you.
