Fun fact: People often look for promotion.

You can accomplish ridiculous amounts of awesome in any DM faction at any basic rank. Armsmen can become heroes to the city, that sort of arrangement. That being said, yes, it is fun to be promoted. It is a fun and difficult journey that has mostly been fleshed out on the OOC side of the factions, and hints are dropped subtlety or blatantly how to obtain such.

This is all well and good.

That being said however, "Advance as swiftly as I am able" is not a viable DM faction goal. It is assumed you would want to seek promotion eventually. So, yeah. If you could leave that out it'd be greatly appreciated. There are far cooler ways to discuss in plot-form, how exactly your character will be ambitious and seek to rise amongst the ranks.

Since the Order is more or less dead, I'll use it as an example.

Example 1: "He wants to do everything he can to become A Knight of the Order" = Bad.

Example 2: "Using a combination of cunning and muscle he would gather various informants into the criminal and villainous world. Using these he would have innocents targeted by these foes and using his status as a Footman, mercilessly crush their plans, giving himself a far greater presence in the eyes of the people".

Sure, its not exactly the most Lawful or Goodly of moves, but often those seeking the highest aspirations find themselves bending the rules of morality and law.

If I saw an application with example 1 as a goal, I would simply skim over that part and look for other interesting nuggets. If I saw an application with #2, I'd go "Damn, that's shady, but ambitious"

Simply put some thought into it, instead of going "Hey guys I want to be promoted fast thanks". With proper time and effort put into an application it can go from "Blah" to "Blam".

We like Blam applications.

Generally I wouldn't advise you concern yourselves with ranks in applications. Many of our most amazing characters lacked high rank.

Ultimately, the application process is meant to be easy. Simply concern yourself with what you plan to do using the newly acquired resources of your application perk. As long as you answer this question reasonably, your application will be accepted.
