is it possible to orient the transitions so that when you head NE from stargazer forest (whatever it's called) you don't all of a sudden turn around and start heading W near the Lake of Steam. I might be wrong but I think the wooded ruin and bog are like this as well. (and likely more areas - foothills?)

There's a thread in the Bug Forums about wrong way facing ATs.  This one is listed there.

I think he means the layout of the maps. Going from Webbed Wood to Lake of Steam you go east but end up at the east end of the next map and have to go west.

Just assume the transition is a long and winding path through the forest that opens up to the west.

This is good.  Many transitions are actually like that.  The area maps we play on are actually small "important areas" of a much larger island.  You sometimes get a message telling you things like, "You travel a long way through such and such and end up in such and such place."

Though I do understand how it can be OOCly disorienting, I do not think it should ICly confuse your character.
