I recently had the thought that portable banners would be a worthwhile contribution to the general awesome of the server.

These would work in the same way as the portable archery targets/barricades/whatever but instead with the models you see displayed outside the Aberdenn and Caermyn House, for example. And these would of course be sold at the specific faction NPC merchants.

Not sure about the workload involved, but feel free to discuss pro/cons as is necessary.

Could be something like the old Banner System, such as at the Forest Wall area, where there were farms you could claim and hold for your banner.

Buy a banner, get a few other PC's, go out to an area of importance for your faction, and put out the Banner. Groups of monsters come out every couple of minutes and work their way toward the Banner. If it is destroyed, you lose favor, but for each "wave" you defeat, you gain favor. Enemies stop coming after a few waves, maybe limit once per reset to avoid farming.

Could also be recorded somewhere for the DM's, and consistently claiming/defending a particular area over a long period of time could yield actual scripted results in the future. Perhaps fighting often in the Starwood could yield a DM event somewhere down the line where you fight off a particularly large number of undead, and if successful, actually cleanse the Starwood.

Caermyn: Sailing, Sis Liman
Aberdenn: Forgotten Forest areas
Muster: Crossroads
Allies of the Zodiac: Prophet's Peaks, Starwood
Wyrm Watchers: Prophet's Peaks, Forgotten Forest areas
Numinous Order: Lake of Mist, Tangled Woods, heavily withered or Misted areas
Conclave: Nebezzdos, Desert, Underdark
Stewards: Any grove area, Ley?

I like Valo's idea, although I'd probably do it without additional spawns.

Simply plant your banner, proceed to clear an area of its spawns, and have your kills attributed to your banner's progress in that area.

I'd probably also just put a time-limit on it. So for example - place a banner, and kills made in that area count towards your banner's progress for the next RL hour. Your faction's banner then cannot be placed in that area again for another four RL hours or similar.

Honestly I had no thoughts about that old banner system in mind when I wrote this, and without commenting further on the pros/cons of that, it could likely warrant it's own thread.

I just imagine this as a cool addition to further build on to the roleplayed act of claiming land, marking passage and other appropriate situations. There are a number of uses really with some of them inspiring conflict, others purely aesthetic.

If the same script used for the items I mentioned above can be applied to these sorts of placeables, that'd be neat.
