As the title says, I think that implementing a better system for mapping and exploration might prove to be highly valuable to the players and promote some more exploration all around. I understand that some of these mechanics are already in game, but I feel like it could be consolidated and made more efficient. The ideas I have are as follows :

Items: Map book
          Map sheet (per area)
Cartographer table + Some form of wilderness map tool

Skills :
EFUSS Cartography (10) (Int modifier + 1/2 wilderness survival modifier)

Player tools / item tools:

/c map create (creates a map of a fully explored area (all map pins must be discovered) - Map is created as "original" and can be traded, or placed into a map book.

/c map reveal - A percentage based tool that measures how many maps you've made of said area, whether said map exists in your map book, and whether the map you hold is original or degraded (see below). Also attempts to discover your relative elevation. Warning: Maps may become vulnerable to over usage, stained, dirty, etc. Low skill rolls increase this rate, while high skill rolls may prevent any damage. "Original" copies may become too degraded to create copies of, and thus the area must be mapped out again.

/c map home - Sets the current area as your "home"
/c map lost - A skill check that attempts to guide you safely back in the general direction of your "home".

/c map modify - Applies custom map pins to your mapbook copy (original only). (Also a method to create fraudulent maps, if one so desired)

Mapbook: OnUse - A menu is brought up -

-Study map - reveals whether your map, if any, is degraded or original for current area. Original maps are created by your character only. (or possibly found?)

- Discard map - Disposes of current area map permanently.

- Create copy - Attempts to create a copy of the area map. Only original maps may be copied. Cartographer table required.

Howlando

I don't know about some of this, but I think it would be cool to have a map book that could save map pins and print maps of a particular area to give to PCs. Our current "map" system which uses (AFAIK) individual map items for individual items is too clumsy to be really viable... this would be very low priority though.
