Enable Pickpocketing

I understand Pickpocketing is currently disabled due to it being ordinarily easily-abused. However, when not abused, Pickpocketing is pretty damn sweet and almost always leads to exciting RP situations, a city-wide chase of the thief by the victim and anyone he can muster being a prime example!

So, I suggest that Pickpocketing be re-enabled with the following parameters;

- Pickpocketing being considered an act of PvP, which means of course a DM is required along with all the other PvP rules needing to be followed
- A reasonable cool-down timer, every hour IRL maybe?
- A tough identification system, with a relatively low Spot DC enjoyed by victims
- Maximum objects stolen per pickpocket set to one, and if a stack is targeted, only one of the stack being taken (potions for exmaple)
- Maximum weight of 2lb being able to be lifted

Thoughts?

Pretty low priority.

If you mean removing the -50 penalty so that the pickpocket radial can be used:
  • The cooldown is not possible, or else we would just be able to disable it instead of the awful -50 penalty we use.
  • Modifying the way pickpocket checks are made is not possible.
  • Modifying what/how pickpocket takes items is not possible.

It is conceivable that an enthusiastic DM might create a "/c pickpocket" voice command that features cooldown and other things you'd want. Unfortunately, it's not possible to 'fix' the default NWN pickpocket, unless there have been new breakthroughs in NWNX recently.

Additionally - since it'll be a PvP action and need a DM whether it's scripted or not, what keeps you from asking a DM to help you pickpocket?

ScottyB's post count is 666.

In seriousness, when I have time I'd be willing to script "/c pickpocket" if there is demand, and when the DM team can agree upon what parameters we want it to run on.

Cruzel

I suggested this (A custom pickpocket system since the hardcoded one is not possible to modify) to snoteye ages ago and he said

"LOL NO"

To be more precise, his words were ;

"I'm pretty much against unsupervised pick pocketing on principle. Pick pocketing is impractical on persistent servers. The implementation is not really relevant."

I HOWEVER, remain confident in my opinion a theivery player tool could (fairly easily!) be made that is (almost completely) unabusable!

VanillaPudding

I could swear I've seen modified pickpocket on a couple of servers that do not use HAKs or overrides. I even remember only being able to steal items under certain weight, 1 at a time, and a time limit on it.

Sternhund

We could do it without HAKs or overrides, and implement it any rules or features we desire with voice commands.

ExileStrife

We can also hook the pickpocket function and make it do something else.  :S

I like this in principle. Though as Caddies said it MUST be DM supervised and be very hard to pull off.

I would imagine environment etc would play a large roll, so outdoors in day light it would almost always fail, no matter the skills of the theif. Indoors and dark you have a *chance*, but its still risky.

I'm behind the cool down idea 100%, but I wouldn't actually mind pickpocketing being a lot easier than everybody seems to think it should be.
The only anti-abuse factor I'd put in is that PP be considered an attack that cancels invis (not stealth).
