Suddenly he makes a suggestion that makes sense! Maybe with it I'll get lvl8!

I don't know about others but I personally had no issue with getting levels as my sorc.

Mortui

While they're certainly not the strongest class out there I don't think picking a class warrants -1 ECL, could be heavily abused, or something.

The Crimson Magician

it isn't like ECL makes a huge difference in your total XP gain anyways.

Getting 4th level spells at 8th is really the most painful aspect of the class. Though fortunately as a mage you're never really in harm's way as much (except as a melee sorcerer, of course). Obviously perks are meant to compensate for that, since Improved Invis, Stoneskin, etc. can be pretty essential for survival.

I think it might be possible to alter 2das to have sorcerers learn spells a level earlier IF DMs were so inclined to tinker with that.

I'm somewhat embarrassed to say that I don't even know what ECL does. Would +/- 1 ECL make it so that a character gains experience as if they were one level higher or lower?

Whatever the case, getting 4th circle spells at level 8 is an annoyance to be sure. But getting 5th circle spells at level 10 instead of 9 is almost frustrating. I've never even had a level 10 PC myself, and I certainly wouldn't start planning for one. Even when you do consider perks, this feels like such an unfortunate disadvantage to have to deal with.

But even with that in mind, sorcerers are way more interesting to play than wizards. The perks and backgrounds allow a great deal more character depth and allow for the "young adventurer" feel that so many people seem interested in playing, wheras wizards are naturally somewhat sagely and bookish in comparison
