Kittens Ate My Soul

I was wondering, how do u rp losing xp from dying, espicially if it means my wizard loses spells?

Also, how do you rp runnig  out of spells as a wiz or sorcerer, like when you have to rest to recharge them? Im a relatively new player, and ive just been saying things along the lines of "I need to meditate to ready my powers", or "Im so exhausted...i cant cast any more spells". Any response to tell me what to do would be great.

Hey man, welcome to EFU:A.

As for RPing death, its entirely up to you. Some people go to great lengths to portray it, but given that its not an uncommon thing, after awhile most people will just play it out more casually, which is fine.

For wizards losing spells, you could say during the fight a few pages of your spellbook were ripped, and you'll need to find more scrolls and research again. Or they got bloody, or you've got a terrible headache, you're amazingly fatigued, etc. They all work, and nobody will think any less of you if you don't want to dwell on the details.

Hope that helps.

Velve

For characters losing their spells due to death, for a Wizard, I would just RP they sustained enough of an injury to the head, they get sort of amnesia, they lose the mental capability to use such spells for a time. For a sorcerer, I usually play it their connection to the weave was broken by the trauma of dying/coming so near death.

For a anything else... They crippled a limb! Just pick a limb suitable for the loss of skill points, or whatever.. If you're a fighter, you injured an arm, thats why your ab is lower. Rogue? Stubbed your poor toe, thats why your dex and sneak/ms are lower, you hobble a little.

But really, its all up to you.

When I die, I've recently taken to taking a break from the character for an extended period. Really, it's because I despise dying, but when I only take a week or two off, I can come back with the handy excuse of recouperating from a vicious blow that should have killed me but barely didn't. Then the process of getting levels back is the process of recovering from minor muscular atrophy from inactivity.

Sorcerors and wizards losing levels, I would play as just being genuinely physically weakened by the exertion of a scrape with death. Your body is weak, and therefore it's less able to channel magic. Thus, you can't cast as many spells per day, nor spells of the higher levels, as you could before.

Wizards, perhaps say that after the battle, you lost a few of your more precious reagents, and the Isle being what it is, you're having a difficult time finding a steady enough supply.

For RPing the XP loss after a respawn, I notice people tend to RP that they've taken a heavy enough blow that they are not fully 'up to speed'.  Like they twisted their ankle or wrenched their arm or are heavily bruised, so they can't be at their best.  It's not something they RP out obsessively, just a simple statement to explain it away and then they move on.

Damage to a spellbook is an easy way to RP loss of a level of spells.  For non-bookish casters, I've seen people say that getting knocked out was a blow to their morale and feeling of self worth, so they aren't able to call on their stronger spells.

On running out of spells between rests:

Dungeons and Dragons is pretty specific on how it works.  For wizards, what they do is memorize their spells for the day.  When the spell is cast, it is removed from your memory.  Why?  It's magic.  Young mages can only memorize so many spells each day, while experienced ones can memorize more spells each day.

So a wizard who runs out of spells may not be physically tired or what have you, but he has exhausted the spells he spent an hour that morning memorizing.

For other casters it's not as strictly explained.  I have always seen spellcasting for sorcs, druids, and clerics as 'channeling'.  Sorcerors channel arcane energy, druids and clerics channel divine energy.  But in order to channel that energy, you have to be able to deal with it, physically, emotionally, mentally, whatever.  As you practice and mature, you have a capacity for storing greater amounts of power and energy.

A young cleric that tried to channel too many spells or spells that were too powerful could 'burn himself out'.  So in this case, maybe casting all of your spells might tire you or drain you.

Now this isn't necessarily the 'right' answer... it's just the way I've always kind of looked at it.

If respawning from a scripted quest you could just pretend you just knocked down, -hard- it is better for RP saying this than saying you were dead and omg you came back to life how?

Yes...broken ribs, severe injury etc.

For a wizard: "I haven't the strength after the berserker nearly cut in two to control the weave to shape that spell...I fear the consequences would be dire..."

Because death can be so common and there really is no exlpanation for just poppin back (none that makes sence anyway) if my character dies while in the middle of  quest and i can respawn after my party has cleared the way, i wasn't killed. I was "taken down" temporarily, because otherwise i feel it would be just too odd to have every single person inmortal due to a higher purpose.

Sometimes you can even ignore the fact that you've become weaker, and people won't notice. But otherwise the explanation given before  -you've been injured and can't fight as well because of the injury- is the most satisfactory. As a spellcaster you can say you've lost the capacity to focus on higher circle spells or that your energies "have faded", and you require time to get them back.

Wizard: 'I think that rat just ate my pages of stoneskin, improved invisibility, including those awesome buffs I just gave you. Bulls, Cats, Endurance, the lot of it. lol no buffs 4 u!'

Fighter: 'Oh noes!'

Jiggling Jester: 'One hell of a rat.'
