Both of these weapons are neglected in EFU:A, leading to Exotic Weapons really meaning "Scythes and Bastardsword Proficiency". Without access to the Manchakan Enclave by the old ferry, katanas are pretty much impossible for any character who refuses to deal with *spoiler*. I've only ever seen one waraxe drop and that was Dwarf/Lawful only sub boss loot, so my PC has been using the same crap rusty shoploot axe since day 1.

Whereas there are multiple very good scythes and some useful bastard swords (+1ab and dmg vs Undead, yes please!),  it would be nice to see some katanas and waraxes that would add a bit of variety. The best way would probably be a couple of waraxe drops, and an expensive (1500 gold or so) but pretty good katana off a specialist merchant. You wouldn't expect to run into many katanas, but an importer NPC might be able to acquire a fine one.

And, before anyone chimes in with the inevitable "exotic weapons are supposed to be *exotic* and hard to find", I'd like to sink that argument first.
  • There's a dwarven settlement that could be expected to make or have made some decent waraxes.
  • There's a quest full of duergar that could have a waraxe drop, or dead dwarves in any quest where adventuing or mercenary companies get wiped out.
  • There were a couple of fairly easy to reach places to get basic katanas in the Underdark.
  • You can have all the bastard swords you want, so it's not a mechanical issue.
  • There's no point choosing a cool weapon to be different or because it's IC if you can't acquire the weapon in the first place.

Dwarven waraxes are for sale at a very easily accessible merchant.

Katanas are basically the exact same thing as bastard swords, but only add flavor. The flavor in question is eastern. And we're -all- the way in the west.

And don't forget double weapons in considering the exotic weapons proficiency.

Flavour is delicious. We're on an island where the majority of inhabitants have been teleported in by a malfunctioning mythallar, it's bound to have teleported in a Kara-Turan merchant holding his prized katanas close to his chest by now.

The lack of certain weapon types can provide interesting plots as well. Hire a smith, make your own weapon, travel to distant places with a group to acquire the weapon etc.

It also most likely mirrors into your character somehow, he blames his lack of skills because of the poor weapon. Or perhaps he simply teaches the local smiths to make these katanas or dwarven waraxes.

Nonetheless, I do agree that some of the hidden shops on the island could have katanas. If they do not already. I at least have been unable to find any other than the manchakans.
