Stealth broken by chests

Change this so that a successful pick pocket check can open the chest quietly.

And therefore not break stealth when you open it.

That's the suggestion.

Paha

I get the idea, but the thing is, opening something like opening a chest is so notable thing that you usually can't miss it. If the lid opens, it's somewhat silly that you can't see what or who is having their hands on it.

Porkolt

I support this suggestion, even though it still won't fool any players.

Buns in the Oven

I'd say this would be an okay suggestion if you could only make a check against chests who's contents weight are .5 or lower.

Porkolt

Perhaps only if you took out those contents that were heavier? I could peek through a slit beneath a chest's lid and determine wether there was a single coin inside or a suit of fullplate.

I suppose my argument against this is that yes, opening a chest sneakily isn't something anybody can do (and the DC for this should be high, maybe about 25), but in a game with dragons and wizards and RwG we have to suspend our disbelief enough to allow for somebody who's such a good thief that they can swipe the chest right out from under your noses. Indeed, if we accept that hiding in the middle of a room, surrounded by people and remaining completely unseen is possible (which is certainly is, given the proper magical stealth gear) then shouldn't we also accept that, as a trade-off for getting a near-magical mastery of pick pocket, you can open a chest without anybody noticing? That's really not much of a stretch.

How about this. Since you don't have to throw open the lid of a chest to see what's inside (you just need a tiny crack to peek in), why not change what specifically breaks stealth to removing things from the chest instead? This could make each independent item have its own pick pocket check, making it more dangerous to swipe everything all at once. Besides, a system for thief mode (concealing when you acquire items) is already in place and would likely not take that much alteration.

<3 you too soot.

Stealth being broken by opening a chest is frankly rather...Retarded, I suppose to use the internet colloquialism.

Just like with stealth breaking when setting a Trap (Which is SO HORRIBLY ANNOYING AND STUPIDLY FOOLISH), this is another thing that kicks stealth folk while down.

That said: Finding more uses for Pickpocket is always well and good and sincerely welcomed.
