New respawn XP penalty

While playing a dwarf character created partly under the new system and having gathered some 2K XP from exploration after it was introduced, I recently suffered death while defending the farmlands from kobolds. Previous to respawn I had 17600 XP. After respawn I was penalised 7466 XP. Near as I can tell, under the previous system I should only have lost some 5800-5900 XP.

This is a pretty serious issue from what I've noticed so far. Players are losing two or more levels even at the relatively lower levels. One person dropped from level 7 at around 23,000 down to level 5 at 11,000 XP from a single death. This sort of thing is happening to every person who dies and respawns from what I can see, in that they are losing over half their XP.
