Lately the Retainers has been a bit low on actively playing members, and has a few open slots to be filled. There are plenty of perks involved, and while there are downsides to the retainers, they're easily outweighed. That said, on joining the guard you'll get a number of bonuses. Including:

Free Resting, You can rest any time you want in a secure area, completely for free.
Persistant Storage, Carrying capacity a problem? Not in the guard! Each member gets their own storage chest, capable of holding up to 20 items, regardless of size or weight.
Free Equipment, On joining the guard you are supplied with a suit of armor,  and helmet, each with special properties, which you can't acquire elsewhere
Cheap Supplies, Armsmen are allowed to purchase supplies at almost base cost, to aid in their duties. This includes Medicinal herbs, Medicines, multiple sorts of potions, shackles, etc
Fat pay check, Armsmen are regularly paid a small sum in the line of their work, and while small, enough playtime, and the money quickly adds up, to better keep you stocked for catching criminals
Good people, OOCly, the retainers are  full of fine, friendly people. While it may not hold true 100% of the time, ICly, the Armsmen tend to get along well, and even if they don't, always have a good reason to quest together.

any except druids and clerics of certain deities but being a wizard/sorc is indeed possible.


Alignment any though non Chaotic is a good idea.      


Also incase your wondering the guard faction isnt just a faction where you represent and fulfill the agenda of the Npcs in charge. You fulfill your own agenda whatever it may be and use your position as an arms-men to get it done. Like police Rl you can be anything from good noble guardsmen that wants to root out crime and corruption to a corrupt guardsmen who wants to get in good with all the major evil Pcs in the game and make loads of money off bribes and doing corrupt acts.

Its a good way to get in on plots and a quick way to make enemies and friends! Ive spent 2 days in it ive done epic plotting epic battles  prosecuted at a trial and even got to sell a man into slavery! This faction is full of flavor and spice I highly recommend this faction to anyone be you a noble protector or more corrupt then Koinus Sten Himself. Even a paladin might be able to join BTW.

Also you can get in with pretty much any race that isnt Half-Orc
