It shouldn't be a cake walk to just trek into the enemy territory, Caster. When I walk my Mortal to Mistlocke for scouting, I'm not expecting margaritas and fresh bbq as I enter hostile territory. Lol.

I think the Rafter is perfect. When/if he dies, think of it as relief from enemy visitors.
