I think Egon nailed it with having hunting "seasons".  Any druid worth his salt would know that some animals need harvested.  Leave it up to the player as when harvesting should stop.
One druid might walk past and not blink and the next one would beat you down for over harvesting

A real dwarf would drink 15 bottles before breakfast.

Quote from: Jagged;249328Animals can sense how a person is feeling. A level 2 would probably soil his pants at the sight of a jaguar, while a level 8 wouldn't even skip a heartbeat.

I'd like very much for you to go hunting with me some time.

Over the dunwarren sending system.   "HALP!  Wererats are attacking me!"

One back in the zig for new PC's would be nice though.

Animals being smarter and not just mindlessly charging everything they see.... This, I agree with.
But as far as levels go, I can't see an  animal being smart enough to know an individuals xp..... Hrmmm, that fellow walks around like a noob, think I'll eat him after that full plate l8 fighter is out of range.

I hate long eared elves.
I hate  fat dwarves.
I hate thieving hin.
I hate short gnomes.

But mostly I hate smelly orc-bloods.

Great axes aren't scary, marsupials are.

Because they're fast.

I haven't tried this quest yet, but if the name and journal entry were changed, would it really matter after you took the quest for the first time?

The key to your reasoning though, is "with improved two weapon fighting", a feat that didn't need to be taken before the change.  Not that the stave was widely used before the change, mind you, but now, it requires extra feats to use it efficiently.
Doesn't really matter much either way once you know what is going on, but for a new player who actually wants to use it for some reason, it sorta bites to find out, only after you have built your PC, that the staff has been changed.

Tried it again after a reset and it worked fine.
