Problems with Baron Bilby's quest

Although this quest is a great challenge and a fun puzzle, it does have some awkward problems. These aren't bugs, but OOC issues that make the quest unnecessarily difficult and that I thought were worth bringing up.

The huge number of traps creates a massive amount of lag, which makes it hard to move precisely and avoid tripping traps.  Some of the areas are too tight to be able to click to move, and WASD moving is fairly certain to knock you onto a trap, or slow you down trying to avoid that

If the quest could be streamlinded to use a less complicated trap layout, it would work a lot better IMO.

Equinox

Tbh it doesn't need any changes, if you are having difficulty walking with wasd, try using stealth mode to slow yourself down more, or walk really slowly. this quest isn't meant to be quick.

Blue41

No, I'd agree with Egon here. You pretty much have to be moving in stealth/detect for FOIG reasons, so speed isn't the issue. I was having a great time until I got to a few tight corners/hairpin turns which made precise keyboard turning a must, and I fucked it up.By the time I tripped my third trap, I didn't even give a crap about finding the rest.

I mean, I'm not gonna lie- I'm definitely going to do it again. But the layout would be my only complaint, if anything.

Caster13

I definitely noticed a hit in my framerate as the screen filled up with red.

Champion_of_brandobaris

Please widen the area between traps. My only complaint is that they are to narrow unless you are -very- good with your mouse clicking

VanillaPudding

I think it's fine except for two exact places in the zone. The only real problem I've had is the stupid SPOILER pushing me into traps because of the collision system.

Mort

It's possible to avoid every trap. It is not easy. That's the point?

Egon the Monkey

The trouble is that the difficulty comes from problems to do with the engine not letting your PC do what you want, not personal skill or PC abilities. Sharp turns, sure, but areas that are narrow  is bad because it ruins clicking, and lag or framerate drop wreck precise keyboard moves. Click move is the only way to not overrun the trap due to those.

Oh and Eq, you DO need a certain amount of speed for a few areas,  I know you only got one gem, so you won't have realised why.

Equinox

egon, everything about you is fail. EVERYTHING.

if i can do it without hitting a trap so can you oh mighty one.

keep it hard.

Random_White_Guy

There's a reason you get Five tries to beat it.

Back when I was playing a PC I got a score of 10 after about four tries, despite dieing on the fourth one to the lag-trap issue (Before it was accessible through Bilby's). It ain't easy, but nothing worth doing is, Y'dig?

Its a cool challenge for rogues, since so few actual quests make you worry about rogue skills (Besides loot chests/ disarm traps on quests), so I honestly love seeing Mort's wonderful Rogue-Challenge back in the mod.

I have to say Mort, but this is currently the best solo quest I've seen on EfU, well done.

I just wish I could find your dratted tenth gem. -.-

djspectre

10th gem is a total fabrication, for sure! Bilby is a lying fatso! I mean look at him, he probably sat on it and its hidden in one of his many butt cracks and he doesn't even realize it!!

Seriously though, Love the quest. Did it twice so far, It really does test all aspects of a rogue and what a really good one ICLY would likely have to go through if they lived the life of a burglar or master thief.

Really a great quest entirely!

Egon the Monkey

Testing this again, I fugued twice as a result of my framerate going to sludge and walking across traps I didn't mean to. I really preferred the old quest which had a manageable number of traps. It could still be tricky, but without the horrible lag.

The quest is very cool. the puzzle aspect good. But when it's a bitch to navicate with precision and speed because of all the objects slowing stuff, that takes a lot of the fun out of it.

SLIM

I just want to say OUCH! Gonna have to side with Egon on this (for reasons he mentioned, specially the spoiler)...

The reward is well worth the risk, but OUCH! :???:

I admittedly don't know the quest, but I'd like to point this out: a role-playing game should not be difficult in the way people seem to suggest. A role-playing game should not require nimble fingers or good reflexes. Wrong genre. A role-playing game should be about patience, strategy, maths and storytelling. NWN is already bad enough with its real-time gameplay, as opposed to the ideal turn-based way the game's supposed to be played. If you want a challenge other than an intellectual one, play Step Mania, Counter Strike or Crash Bandicoot, IMO.
