Katanas and Weapon Finesse

Alright, I used the search option for both this forum and the old one and I didn't see this asked anywhere, though I know for certain it has to have been asked at some point.

It should also be noted I don't expect this to actually happen, hence this is in General and not Suggestions.

So, here is my question. Is it at all possible to put a script in that would allow using a Katana with Weapon Finesse?

Why do I ask? Come on people. If you have studied Kenjutsu like I have, or even seen an old samurai movie (Kurosawa is the man), it is readily obvious that the Katana requires more finesse than strength to wield properly. Properly being the key word, it is of course possible to wield it like a brute.

IMO.

Katanas are not the only large weapons that would benefit from agility.  Dexterity can realistically apply to every weapon, including hammers.  If NwN was hyper-realistic there would be a strength req to determine how easily you can wield a weapon based on weight, after which dexterity is a factor.

Regardless it would be a nice way to make a diference in between the katana and the greatsword.

Also while i agree even a maul needs dexterity, some weapons require in proportion, more dexterity than strenght than others, the maul might need more str than dex, the katana otherwise.

If Katana damage was dropped to 1d8 or 1d6, maybe.

1d6 would be pointless, a rapier has a better critical, it's easier to wield (martial or rogue if i'm not mistaken) and does the same damage. The only diference being the damage type, but the shortsword would be the same damage type, with better critical, same damage and small enough to dual wield. So, 1d6 would make the katana pretty pointless.

1d8 might work, as a variant for the morningstar, with lamer ciritical.

i'd say 1d10 is fine, since it is an exotic weapon, but i'm not actually suggesting it to happen. Just pointing out his point makes sence.

Katana should be 2d12, I've seen real Ninja cut through cars. Japanese swords are so much better than everything else. Nyoron~

(Bows require more strength than dexterity to use properly, yet dexterity gives you to-hit with them. That's just D&D.)

The Crimson Magician

As I see it, katanas seem to be more for roleplay, since other people seem to just dig in on the same exact bastard sword.

I agree with pretty much everything that has been said here. But my real question, mainly to the scripters out there, is it POSSIBLE to make the Weapon Finesse feat apply to Katanas.

Again, I know this wont happen on this server, but my buddy has been working on a server for a few months and if it IS in fact possible, I know he would be interested in it.

Egon the Monkey

Actually, I'd rather just see MORE katanas.
People using Exotic weps take the Bastard sword because you can actually find decent ones. You can't so far as I've seen acquire improved Dwarven Waraxes or Katanas on quests.

So, to improve the range of exotic weps, let's see some Ancient Netherese Swordmaster Blades (Katanas) around  and Duergar Waraxes on Puprle Crystal Mines, for example.

The Crimson Magician

IMO, katanas should be a rarity, seeing as they are a from a Kara-Turan setting, and Mulan, if I can recall correctly.

Our setting has nothing to do with either of these places.

Mort

I dislike Katanas and dwarven war-axes and since I made a good chunk of the 'random' loot, Well! You wont see them often outside of custom-made weapons.

As for being scripted, no, you can't script it.

I sometimes amuse myself with this on long car journeys.
A trail of destruction follows me as cars are sliced clean in half by swords or lasers or lightsabers.

... Yes.  REAL ones.

Maybe you could implement the Wakazashi, smaller cousin of the Katana. I am almost positive it'd be about the size of a short sword, and thus could fit into the list of Finesse Weapons.
