Animal Fighting

So inspired by certain things going on, I'd like to have some kind of system in which PCs can buy or capture certain kinds of low-powered creatures (rats and maybe dogs or chickens) and then have them fight each other and the PCs could gamble over the outcome. I have a player volunteer (NGCS) who is enthusiastic about doing the scripting work.

But I'm not quite sure how the system should work, and honestly have enough on my plate that I don't want to think about it too much.

So if you have any suggestions, feel free.

The main idea is:
1) It should be impractical to use the trained creatures for fighting monsters/questing
2) It should be interesting
3) It should be fairly expensive to get a good creature

So if anyone wants to brainstorm up a cool way that this could work in the world of EFU, please be my guest.

Let me share with you my vision for this, as of this afternoon.

You can catch a creature in a special cage that you'd have to buy. Creatures would have a point value associated with them. (Some random amount.. like 5 - 10) ... You could then feed them treats to empower them. You use the animal cage on special placeables and your creature spawns and a fight starts!

Something like:

QuoteStrength 1 point per 1/2 strength
Hit points 1 point per 2 hit points
Dexterity (ac) 1 point per 1/2 dex
Concealment 1 point per 3 percent concealment
Attacks = 5 points per 1 attack

Maybe do it like you have different categories of creature fighting, but they can only be pit against creature of their same type.

Beetles, rats, bats, worms, etc.

That way you can allow the creatures to get stronger, but they get stronger via some kind of AC vs specific type or FE system so they aren't really any stronger for use outside their particular creature fighting stuff.

Give them negative AB such as -20 at the lowest, but similarly giving them extremely low ac. Whenever they gain AB just deduct the penalty from the creature weapon.

I know how I am going to do that. They won't be under PC control at all. Don't worry about #1.

Woo this will be fun maybe. I maxxed out my trainer card to 5-star black on Pokemon Pearl.

Bought monsters could be held or found as tokens/totems perhaps? Spirit Beast Duels!

Instead of doing something overly complicated I would suggest to keep things simple.

Have a baseline of 10 ability score for all creatures. Having one level of animal gives +3/4 AB. Damage dealt should not be above 1.

Easiest would be to limit it to one type of creature (rat, chicken, beetle etc). If you want more than one type, give each an advantage and disadvantage. If rats are harder to hit, they should have less hp. If beetles are tougher, they should not be able to hit as often. But keep the variations small and do not make one creature better than another.

I would suggest having creatures become slightly better through killing other fighting animals. Let them earn a bit of "XP" each time and depending on how tough the opponent was, then advance them on a "level" chart. Leveling up should give very, very small bonuses. Maybe first levelup is only +1 temporary HP.

Perhaps creatures could learn special abilities at level up. Snakes could constrict rats (DC 10). Each type giving an own inherent ability or different creatures of the same type learn slightly different things at random.

At first though I recommend getting the basic structure and one creature type down. Then iterate.

I have some good ideas from this thread. Thanks guys. I'll be working on this this weekend. Feel free to PM me on IRC if you want to help test this system as it comes together.
