Quick and simple, give the Scribes a new book in their store that tracks the current amount of money in the treasury.

Honestly, I'd rather have this be some sort of clickable (secondary to the Stele) that requires you to be a Scribe or Legate, rather than an item. Simply because how joining the faction is right now, combined with the fact that in the past, people have spread the other compendiums to people outside of the faction with little repercussion, because the culprit can be near impossible to figure out.

In those cases it's a very minor issue, but I think the state of the treasury should be a more guarded thing that people are actually forced to interact with others in some fashion for.

My thought was more for access to the information during meetings and the like without having to run all the way somewhere and get it. But the point about access to the information and the scribes in general is very valid.

Well, additionally it doesn't even make sense to use the Scribe powers from the book if you aren't a scribe, it's just a representation of being in the faction....not a book with mystical governmental powers you can steal -_-

At least I would ASSUME...

Getting a full accounting of the cost of various things as well would be quite amazing. Like knowing that title x has cost the treasury this amount over it's lifetime, or per month...if that's even possible.

Could this be solvable by just making the Compendium assign the PC's name to it on purchase, like e.g. the Sandstone Ring/robes?

Yeah. With the other compendiums it's sort of excusable because their info is readily available elsewhere. Still annoys me when people circumvent one of the cute little perks that Scribes have.

Oh, I completely forgot about this system. Yeah, it'd solve a large part of it. Leaking them would still be a tad too easy, but it might get balanced out with how easy it would also be to get caught with the name pointing it out.

Generally I think the ideal case for petty crime/betrayal is 'easy to do/hard to get away with'.
Because that ensures a regular drip of Mysteries to Solve, but once you have a suspicion, proof is relatively easy.

Other option would be making them 0 weight and Untradeable. So it's just a representation of the knowledge you get off the records each morning.

Something like this would make doing crimes and shady stuff as Legate a lot harder. I don't think that's a good thing. People would make spreadsheets with treasury data and make noise about any changes. Keeping it as something of a black box creates the possibility of suspicion and drama, which is good for the game.

I don't think assigning a scribe name or consequences to a 'treasury book' would prevent them from being quickly leaked.

I agree with FSP that the treasury status should be learned through RP.

AsheandCinders

There are already scribe PCs who can check the Treasury on the stele. And on an In Universe level the Scribe NPCs are the ones managing the Treasury, legates aren't moving masses of money around with nobody in the government any the wiser.

illumination

Being able to check a book at will would be less restrictive than being an approved scribe who has to walk to the Stele.

My concern with a leaked book is not about an unscrupulous PC being able to hide activity from the Ephian govt, it's about hiding activity from people outside the Ephian govt.

AsheandCinders

Ah, I get you now. A very fair point.

I think we're seeing a combination of two issues really. Scribes Ostensibly being the government and information faction, but not being able to have too much information due to having no restrictions to joining freely and no real internal faction checks or ranks aside from entirely player controlled ones.
