Faith Is My Shield

To the Janissaries of the Sultan's Fourth Legion,

This letter is intended to address a number of issues regarding the trial expected for those responsible for the disastrous Al-Nasr delve of Illul 22nd, IY 7789.

Firstly, while justice requires careful consideration and due process, it must be weighed against the expectations of the public people and those harmed. We suggest the trial to be held on the upcoming weekend of the 26th and 27th of Illul. These dates are suggested because it is expected more people would be available to attend and witness the trial. We recognize this is of short notice and understand if you wish to pick a later date. Please confirm the preferred date with us Legates to ensure our availability.

Second, from our own preliminary findings, we expect the following people to be charged, at minimum, with capital charges of Descent into Al-Nasr (specifically the version placed upon the Stele on the date of Illul 19th, IY 7789, see attached below):

  • Armin Albertos
  • Eva Keter
  • Hanson Gilbracht
  • Jamileh Attar
  • Shum Sheroy
  • Zol Nur

This will, ideally, be a single trial where all six stand accused together. If any of them are not available, we will hold repeat trials until all six have been tried.

Thirdly, an issue that needs to be specifically addressed by the Lieutenants, we are aware that Janissaries facing trial while still wearing their uniform may be a sensitive issue to the Fourth Legion--no one wishes to bear the weight of prosecuting their own colleagues. Thus, we urge you to take whatever administrative action is needed, if you consider it necessary, in regards to the two above listed Janissaries, before the start of the trials. Please note that ordered demotions may be viable options for sentencing should the Legionnaires be found guilty.

Fourth, part of the preliminary information we received was provided to us by the Consolute. We will be sending a request to the Consulate that they aid the Fourth Legion, as they deem necessary, in preparation for this trial. We urge you to follow-up on this vigorously to ensure that the proper evidence can be presented at trial and to the public.

These are dire times we live in. Together, may we work towards a result suitable and acceptable to both the Twins and the Wroth.

On Behalf of Ephia's Well,
Legate Faith Kruehtzer
Legate Vellyn Lhyrian

QuoteDescent into Al-Nasr
A person entering or facilitating the entrance of others into Al-Nasr or the depths below it without proper authorization has committed Descent into Al-Nasr. Such authorizations must be signed by a reigning legate and may be revoked at any time.

Serious: Participating in a concealed expedition

Capital: Causing great harm through an expedition

To the Janissaries of the Sultan's Fourth Legion,

As per the forwarded series of correspondence, the Consulate is not able to provide any evidence.

Consult with the Preperators of the Maqbara to obtain record and number of the dead. Regarding the behaviour of the Tormented in relation to the movement of the delvers, you will need to depend on gathered testimony, bellow records, and logic.

On Behalf of Ephia's Well,
Legate Faith Kruehtzer
Legate Vellyn Lhyrian

A further letter addressed specifically to Soldier Ibrahim al-Dawla.

Soldier Ibrahim al-Dawla,

I have confirmed with Legate Lhyrian that we both want you to handle the prosecution. Please proceed accordingly.

We Hold What Is Poured,
Legate Faith Kruehtzer

P.S. Beware of any other attempts of interference. Should any of your fellow Soldiers be available to do so, perhaps consider investigating what interference has occurred thus far to determine if they have crossed any legal lines.

Another letter...

Janissaries of the Fourth Legion,

Please confirm if Scribe Simon Tallen provided a report about possible Tormented in the Gutters prior (approximately six hours) to the six delving below on Illul 22nd.

A reply is sent bearing the seal of the Fourth Legion

Legate Faith Kruehtzer,

It is standard procedure for such a case to be tried by a Lieutenant, due to Sergeant Gilbracht's rank. Additionally the procedure is for such issues to be handled by court martial, however with the involvement of the Princess and the public nature of the matter perhaps this is not possible.

I have been authorised to stand in as prosecutor if such is your order as legates, should a member of the Lieutenancy not be available. I shall begin preparing my case, if you could provide to me any already gathered materials such would be most helpful.

Please continue to seek official response from the lieutenancy.

Blessed be all that walk in His Excellency's realm, so lucky we are. Praises be sung for our anointed liege; His Magnificence Sultan Osman the Sixth.  By his Izdu-given wisdom we are steered, and his proud axe-blessed heart protected. May our every step follow in the rut of the wheel, and after that His grand design. Health and safety for the line of Maribid, from His Excellency to his treasured daughters; each boundlessly kind and astute. Let not the sinner walk unchallenged, those that would stride in our midst with full smiles and bright eyes; Urazzir's chill rob them of the breath they would cast at us as lies.

Soldier Ibrahim Al-Dawla,
31st of Illul, IY 7789

Soldier Ibrahim al-Dawla,

Thank you for the status update.

Please refer to my earlier correspondence regarding evidence provided by the Consulate. Also, then-Scribe Amani ibn-Ibrahim has written a transcript of the events from the perspective of the surface. We will continue to seek a response from the Lieutenancy.

Furthermore, because of the unique nature of this trial, please note the following changes to the Procedure of Law under consideration by Legate Lhyrian and myself. These have not yet been finalized.

  • To account for scheduling/availability, the trial shall hopefully occur with all six accused present, if this does not happen, subsequent trials will occur until all six have been trialed
  • After the Opening Oration of the State and Advocate, the accused shall be given a chance to plead guilty or not guilty
  • If they all plead guilty, we skip to Closing Orations
  • If any plead not guilty, we proceed as per standard procedure focused on those who plead not guilty
  • Prior to the Verdict, we invite the accused a chance to speak any words of contrition
  • Both Legates shall sit as judges

Once you near ready to perform the prosecution, let us know and we will begin coordinate the time and date for the trial.

We Hold What Is Poured,
Legate Faith Kruehtzer
