The new animal companions are counted as summoned creatures. You speak through them with /v s, and presumably dismissal will work on them. I found two strange and probably unintended downsides to them being summons though.

When trying to cast a summoning spell it automatically releases what I tried to summon. In my case I have 100/100 summoning points in use with my companion out. Not sure if other companions have different points or if they use up all points regardless of type. This means that whenever the companion is active summoning spells cannot be cast.

The other thing is when summoning items are used it does not say that you are at your maximum summoning points and make the attempted summon instantly break. What it instead does is dismisses the companion and summons the creature instead.

It's nothing game breaking, but something that should be made aware. Summons and animal companions won't mix.

The animal companions should no longer count towards the summoning point pool.

Next reset.

Hate to bring up an old thread but using summoning items still dismisses your animal companion.  Almost learned this the hard way!
