When trying to use the alchemy research station I can view my history and amount of points but can't use them. Not sure if it's user error or something actually wrong.

You have to be level 4 to my knowledge as well have sufficient alchemy points. Also you can only attempt research every 24 hours. Otherwise it shows up with no dialogue option for research.
