Can't MW Dwarven waraxe

Like the title says, whenever I've tried to use an item with Magic Weapon charges on my dwarven waraxe (vanilla, no special properties whatsoever) I get 'item is not a valid target for this spell' message that would come as if tried using it on a bow. Haven't tried having mages cast it on me, so I can't speak if the problem is the weapon or the item (a brass necklace in this case.)
