Just closed on buying a house so unless it falls through before the contract signing I won't have as much time to game for a few weeks.

You're all safe from Crazypickle Marjolo for a while

A few weeks...

I signed on buying an apartment on the 12th November...

I still don't have a moving in date...

Triumvirs,

It is the ecumenical council's view that such heretical practices are a disgrace to this Ward! What manner of slovenly conduct have the eminent bishops been engaging themselves in, such that these blasphemous beliefs have been able to seize such a stranglehold on the throats of this most pious domain?

The council demands action, with all immediacy. You shall not ignore the threat these heathens pose! An inquisition must be established at once.

Promise Keep,

Scribe Aethric Valance

Egbert Flax,

It is to my understanding that you are interested in pursuing a bishop's seat. A most curious decision! I am, naturally, in favour of such an upstanding gentlemen of decorum and piety as yourself securing such a position - alas, some of my compatriots are a little less convinced by my wholly persuasive recommendations.

Perhaps a pecuniary incentive would not go amiss...? I think that the sum of three-thousand groat ought be sufficient to smooth over any niggling qualms certain vested interests may have about your less desirable qualities....

Promise Keep,

Chaplain Adalmar Winespill

A reply is carved in Khuzdul. . .

OUTLANDER-COUSIN,

IT IS NOT OUR WAY TO DELVE IN THE SQUABBLES OF MAN. MAN IS NOT STONE, MAN IS WATER. FLUID. UNPREDICTABLE. DANGEROUS. YOU ASK US TO CARVE INTO AN AQUIFER. WE WILL NOT DO THIS.

YOU SHOULD ASK YOURSELF AGAIN IF THE ANCESTORS TRULY FAVOUR YOUR PATH. NEVER HAVE OUR FATHERS LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR THOSE WHO ARE NOT WROUGHT FROM EARTH AND CLAY.

Gerhardt Eweout,

The council has deliberated over your petition, and deemed you worthy of the position of Lord's Bishop. It is our earnest hope that you shall demonstrate the valour, confidence and prowess required of such a role, and that you shall not succumb to the tempting manipulations of those secular powers which might seek to influence you...

A summons shall be delivered when it is time for you to take your vows and receive your robes of office.

Regards,

Chaplain Gerhard Greywood

Gawen,

There is only so much I can countenance from my vassals before I must consider the health of my House. My lands are besieged, our numbers are few, our coffers are nigh-empty, and now both Orza and Velstra turn their ire upon me. To give sanctuary to one such as you will be seen as a brazen insult by Lord Norbert's house, and that is not an insult I am willing to deliver at this time.

Announcements / PRELUDES
« on: January 02, 2021, 12:35:17 PM »
Hello EFU,

There are two opportunities for upcoming preludes that players can take part in.

As usual, if you are playing an active PC, you should not quit them to join a prelude. If your PC is below level 7, younger than 2 months, and not involved in any active conflict, then you may submit an application for the preludes.

You may submit an application for both preludes if you wish. If you do so, you should include both applications in the same ticket, separated by a line _______ or dash --------- sequence.

Successful applicants will be contacted as a group to arrange a suitable prelude date.

EU timezone players may be preferred due to my own availability, but Americans or Asian players should feel free to apply also.

These preludes are high-conflict, and you should not anticipate a particularly long lifespan. On the other hand, you will start with a higher power level than normal for new PCs and may have access to other perks to help level the playing field.

Prelude One: Cloven Vengeance

The hated softskins have robbed us of our savage power. They have shattered our stones, and broken our spirit, and cast us out to the furthest rings. It falls upon you now to restore our ancient power - gather the lost fragments of the Great Herdstone, and bring them to our sacred place. Our vengeance shall be absolute, and through the power of the herdstone we shall lay waste to the dominion of men.

SUBRACE: Ghyl
CLASS: Monk banned
ALIGNMENT: Any Evil,
ROLE: Monster, hostile to most/all PCs

GHYL
Base race: Human
Stat changes: +2 STR, +2 CON, -2 INT, -2 CHA
Saving throws: +1 Fortitude
Racial type: Monstrous Humanoid
Misc bonus: +10% movement speed, Quick to Master (from Human base), +1 feat (from Human base)
Alignment: Evil
ECL: +1

Prelude Two: Sanguine Dawn

He speaks to us in our dreams. We hear him. He has returned from beyond the veil of death. He is more than a God - he is the master of all things between heaven and earth. We are his devoted, we are his chosen. We shall give of ourselves unto him, and unto him shall be given those he desires.

SUBRACE: Human
CLASS: Wizard banned, Druid banned
ALIGNMENT: Any Evil
ROLE: Cultist, hostile to many PCs

General Discussion / Re: Noob Guide - EFU for the ROLEPLAYING SNOB
« on: December 10, 2020, 11:36:50 AM »
I'm not really sure where the belligerence of the above replies is coming from. For my part, this thread seems reasonably well-written and a balanced perspective from a player who is clearly a relative newcomer to EFU as opposed to the "Old Guard" who have been with the server since its earlier iterations.

I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on EFU, Gizmo, and believe the advice will be received positively by others coming to EFU from a similar place as yourself.

I'm mostly inclined to think the above posts are largely coming from a place of knee-jerk conservatism and an aversion to changes in the current ethos, to be blunt.  There is no harm in advising players who come from a less "hardcore" roleplaying background to adopt a more pragmatic approach to their character building - to suggest otherwise would be quite hypocritical from some of the names I see here...!

Retainer Goiteiaima,

Lord's favour be upon you.  It is our pleasure to inform you that the Council has deemed you fitting for the duties of the Promised Bishop, and the Chaplain shall see you ordained for holy service in the days to come.

The subject of Adaias Nephezar's unorthodox proclamations, and claims of deific status, are against the traditional scriptures. We think it prudent to warn you of possible controversy or internal strife with the other Bishops concerning this matter.

By the Promise,

The Ecumenical Council

The letter from the Archives is discussed at great length in the chambers of the Vestry, where members of the Council quickly begin to factionalise over the topic of Alberic's suitability for the role - while his supporters are sufficient in number to prevent any meaningful action, a growing proportion of cynical detractors decry the man as a 'toothless cat we thought a lion'...

After a day of heavy deliberation, the Council returns with a reply. How much influence might have been exerted by outside forces is unclear, but rarely is the Council able to make decisions in a vacuum.

Tadeusz,

Lord's favour upon you. We have received and considered your submission, and upon deliberation have deemed that you are not fitted for the position of Bishop at this time. We remind you of your many dedications to such duties as your House and the Inquisition, and would not think it hale for your limited time and attention to be divvied wantonly between such an array of obligations.

By the Promise,

The Ecumenical Council

[ :: Day ??  Year ?? :: ]

An intense row in the Velstra mansion sparked a sequence of events that almost led to war within the Peerage. Following a scathing shouting match between Nicholas and Ruul Velstra, the latter promptly teleported out of the mansion - fed up of dealing with his sibling's apparent wroth. Afterwards, Nicholas brazenly mustered the retinue of his Lionsguard and a handful of siege engines, before marching out to surround and besiege Castle Orza - to the surprise and horror of many onlookers.

The situation swiftly escalated, owing no small thanks to the savage personal rivalry between Kristoff and Nicholas that had been festering ever since Maximilien Orza's death at the hands of the latter in a duel. Tensions heightened to the point where a ballista behind the Velstra barricade shot the castle several times, causing some property damage and even a casualty to one of the arbalests on the roof. Just as the Lionsguard were preparing to bring up the battering ram, a reluctant Guiseppe Orza leaned over the machicolations to explain something to Nicholas.

The Red Lion had, it seemed, been informed by one of his courtiers of the conspiracy behind his wife's malaise - her soul had been stolen by Guiseppe Orza during the Battle for the Steadings. Promising to kill the Orzan warlock for his crime, the situation became more complicated when it became apparent that Guiseppe no longer had the soul of Valentina - because it had been released into the aether.

To the growing horror of Yashan Sarde and Ser Nicholas, Guiseppe revealed that Valentina's soul had been claimed by the Nothing. Kristoff, who knew nothing of this, shifted tact and instead negotiated a truce with Nicholas; in return for offering some of House Orza's best soldiery for an expedition into the Nothing, a ceasefire would be agreed for ten days. Rumours of this planned expedition, a joining of forces between the retainers of two Houses to rescue a lost soul from the shadowy grip of Trystan Moonspear, spread like wildfire in the Peerage Ward. Dubbed the 'Forlorn Hope', owing to the impossibility of their success, willing volunteers prepare themselves for the challenge of their lives - and perhaps the last...

// This event will take place on Saturday 14th November, evening GMT, approximately 1 or 2 hours from the time of this rumour's posting. This event contains permadeath threats.

General Discussion / Re: What would make you play more non-human PCs?
« on: November 11, 2020, 02:11:30 PM »
Since its beginning, EFU has essentially been a narrative about humans. The primary cast of NPCs for most chapters has been human, the most prominent PCs have usually been human, and the story being told tends to revolve around humans in general. In that sense, it draws from a tradition of fantasy that does not need to make use of non-human characters to advance its storytelling and narrative. There have been exceptions to this rule, such as the Stargazers, Diluvians, and arguably even the Ghylherd and Recondite recently, but in such circumstances the DM team usually moves to their own custom homebrew lore or subrace rather than the forgotten realms traditional content.

Now speaking for myself rather than the team as a whole, I generally find Gary Gygax's lore and the world of forgotten realms to be quite lacklustre, generic and boring. The races presented in it are not interesting, aside from a few choice standouts and beloved classics from the monster manual like mindflayers. I also have to make a rather cynical note that most of our stellar PCs and excellent characters have been humans - not because they are more enabled by the setting, but because a human character is unique and remarkable based on its personality, actions and merit rather than its identity as a subrace. As someone who used to play elves and halflings back in Revelations, I generally stopped doing so when I came to realise that I was just using them as an artificial way of being unique and different. It was lazy characterisation. I can certainly accept that some concepts that players have absolutely must be a given subrace because of how core that racial identity is to the themes or motifs their character is intended to portray... But that's certainly not the case in all or even most subrace PCs.

"Aye lad we must dig deep in the mountains" is neither entertaining nor value-adding to the collective narrative of EFU.

Retainer of House Glitt,

I fear we have little we can offer you in way of food from our own stores - indeed, my shamans tell me this will be a harsh winter and that we must prepare for the worst in the coming months. That said, I have no doubt that Uirdan Khan and his forces have their own reserves we might be able to recover if we are victorious in battle. I shall send word by courier when the hour comes, and you may rally what warriors you can to aid us.

Arveg Khan
