/c name_companion X  does not recognize the hound as an animal companion and will not change the name.

Try summoning again and/or move into another area. The feedback is wrong I believe, though not sure why it is wrong.

It does work despite the error message, weird enough.

The name is always "Houndmaster Puppy" when you summon it, and will change to the set name once you transition.
